- 1Dear Jeffrey,
- 2On this occasion, I am reminded of your many
- 3conversations, fuelled by both your curiosity and your
- 4skepticism. Quoting great minds may be the only
- 5gift I can give you to stimulate the one and release
- 6the other.
- 7First, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.:
- 8'Certitude is not the test of certainty. We have
- 9been cock sure of many things that were just so.' Your
- 10curiosity, continuing on with your skepticism, will
- 11take care of this without hazard, birthday after birthday.
- 12Next, Thoreau:
- 13"Pursue, keep up with, circle round and round
- 14your life, as a dog does his master's chase. Do
- 15what you love. Know your own bone; gnaw at
- 16it, bury it, unearth it and gnaw it still." This
- 17too, you do admirably.
- 18Then, Leonardo da Vinci:
- 19"Iron rusts from disuse, stagnant water loses its
- 20purity and in cold weather becomes frozen; even so
- 21does inaction sap the vigor of the mind." Epstein is
- 22not at risk. When he is in the room, you do not
- 23fall asleep.
- 24Finally, a remark from the not so great Gertrude Stein
- 25on your interests:
- 26"As a cousin of mine once said about money,
- 27money is always there but the pockets change; it is
- 28not in the same pockets after a change, and that
- 29is all there is to say about money."
- 30You have said more and, going beyond
- 31talk, have shown how to find it.
- 32And so, felicitations on the vigors of your
- 33body and mind, and warm hopes for many occasions
- 34celebrating their gifts.
