Evidence methodology FAQ

What the record shows—and what it does not.

Public-safe answers for reading claims, sources, timelines, OCR, receipt counts, bias, silence, and confidence.

What does “presence-only” mean?

It means a record contains a name, entity, address, event, phrase, or identifier. Presence alone does not establish identity, affiliation, knowledge, purpose, conduct, or guilt.

What is a receipt?

A receipt is a source-bound item: an original record, evidence card, source identifier, or documented excerpt that can be checked independently.

Are receipt counts allegation counts?

No. Counts describe published cards or unique source identifiers. Multiple receipts may support one narrow fact, and a receipt may support no allegation at all.

How is confidence assigned?

Confidence is claim-specific. Direct source text may support a date or reference at high confidence while purpose, identity, or legal interpretation remains low-confidence or unresolved.

How is source bias handled?

The archive notes who created a record, why it may exist, whether it is partial, and whether it is OCR, litigation material, correspondence, official reporting, or another source type.

What does “silence” mean?

Silence records what the available source does not establish. It is not proof that an event did or did not happen.

How reliable is OCR?

OCR is a search aid. It can misread names, numbers, punctuation, layouts, and redactions. Important claims should be checked against the underlying page.

What are open receipt slots?

They are explicit gaps: a source has not been recovered, a claim needs stronger support, a translation needs review, or context remains unresolved.

How are corrections handled?

Corrections should identify the page, exact statement, source conflict, and proposed change. The goal is a visible, evidence-backed correction trail.

How do I contact the archive?

Send source tips, correction requests, broken-link reports, or archive questions. Do not send illegal material, private personal data, passwords, or anything requiring secure legal handling.
