Editorial purpose
Open Questions are unresolved source slots. They become assignments for future source work, not implied accusations or hidden conclusions.
This page is part of the public newsroom architecture added on 2026-07-12. It is not a raw archive index and it is not a search-results page. It groups original editorial work that already carries byline, dates, source citations, limitations, alternate interpretation, and open questions.
Start with the claim package.
Open the article, read the thesis, inspect the key findings, then follow the primary-source chain. A route, source card, or search hit should be treated as evidence only for the narrow claim it supports.
Silence remains labeled.
Where the linked sources do not prove motive, purpose, conduct, identity, continuity, legal status, or causation, the page leaves that gap in limitations or open questions. That conservative standard is deliberate.
What belongs here
Original editorial work, not raw search output.
Open Questions pages must do more than point at records. They should explain why a source matters, what claim it can support, what bias or extraction risk travels with it, what the source is silent about, and how much confidence a reader should assign to the narrow claim. Pages that only expose a query, an API response, a source-card shell, or a machine-generated card belong under Explore the Archive and should not be promoted as editorial work.
The editorial layer is also a corrections layer. If a reader finds a better source, a broken citation, a mistranscription, an overbroad inference, or a missing limitation, the correction path should be obvious. The goal is not to make every page sound final. The goal is to make the archive's reasoning testable.
Every index page must send readers forward.
Use the cards above to enter the article set, then use each article's source-chain links to inspect the record. Use the footer and Explore route only after the editorial frame has identified the claim being tested.
Thin pages stay on the repair list.
If this category grows into a larger section, new pages should be added only when they include source citations, dates, limitations, and open questions. Placeholder pages and duplicate templates should remain unpublished, merged, or noindexed.
Book of Black questions start as unverified leads.
The Book of Black belongs in this workflow only when a manuscript claim can be tested against records, logged with limits, and left unresolved or retired when the evidence does not carry it.
Return path
Keep tools under Explore the Archive.
Raw search, API routes, source cards, topic indexes, the evidence cockpit, Birthday Book reader, and Barak tool pages remain available under Explore. They are finding aids and proof layers, not substitutes for source-bound editorial pages.
